Organ Donation Awareness

The

"Ang Daan Karo"

Project

The "Ang Daan Karo" project was organised by mother and daughter, live donor and recipients respectively, Anita & Natasha Sandhu with Lehmber Hussainpuri who had previously offered to donate his kidney to Natasha. Before the project began, Lehmber Hussainpuri had gifted a song in celebration of Anita and Natasha’s journey, titled “Ban Gai Aa Jodi”, and had given an interview regarding his views on organ donation.

On 11th September 2018, many distinguished guests, including Lehmber Hussainpuri, were invited to the Houses of Parliament for a meeting to discuss the matter of raising awareness for organ donation.

The event was organised by Anita & Natasha Sandhu, who had experienced the hardships of finding a suitable donor and have in turn dedicated their lives to raising awareness and dispelling some of the stigmas associated with organ donation.

We heard the personal stories of those who were on the waiting list, heartfelt testimonies from some who had lost loved ones and made the difficult decision of donating their organs, as well as the expert opinions of doctors & surgeons involved.

With Anita and Natasha’s relentless approach and initiative, within a year, an impressive number of Panjabi artists were unified in creating a song dedicated to spreading the message of organ donation to the BAME community: Lehmber Hussainpuri, Sardool Sikander, Mangal Singh, Surinder Shinda, Sardara Gill, Premi Johal, Kumar Heera, Kanth Kaler, Mangi Mahal, Premi Jassi, Amrinder Bobby, Palvinder Dhami (Heera), Balwinder Safri, Harjit Harman, Arvinder Singh Arv, Binder Nawepindia (lyricist) and Raju Premi (music producer).

On 25th September 2019, these artists were also honoured at the UK Houses of Parliament with a historical presentation of official certification awarded by MP Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi to those that have participated in the recording of “Ang Daan Karo”, a Panjabi song centred on spreading the message of organ donation to the community.

At the "Ang Daan Karo" launch for organ donation awareness hosted by Dr. Onkar Sahota, at City Hall, London, a beautiful & prestigious location on the Thames, we heard the personal journey of Bollywood playback singer Mangal Singh, who was on the organ donor waiting list, was offered a live donation while undertaking this mission, and by the grace of God received a live donor within months of this event. The sensational Sardool Sikander also had a few words to say about his unique experience thanks to his wife, the legendary Amar Noorie, who donated her kidney to him.

With help from the Punarjot Eye Bank Society, much of the video for “Ang Daan Karo” was recorded in India, with the “Ang Daan Karo” Torch, a symbol of the Gift of Life, being relayed among artists, surgeons, doctors, nurses, donors, recipients and supporters of Organ Donation. The Torch was then brought to the UK by Lehmber Hussainpuri and was then circulated among artists, donors and supporters in and around the UK. Anita and Natasha Sandhu hope to carry on this International relay, documenting every bearer of the Torch, with the aim of spreading awareness of the Gift of Life that can be given in registering for Organ Donation.
